Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted to the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi based on doctors recommendations.

The BJP says hes been taken to the hospital for a routine check-up.

AIIMS director Randeep Guleria is personally keeping a watch on Vajpayees health.

As per the advice of Doctors, Former PM, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji has been admitted in AIIMS today for [a] routine check-up and investigations. He will be under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS there.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a veteran BJP leader, served as prime minister thrice - briefly in 1996, and for two terms between 1998 and 2004.

A distinguished lawmaker, Vajypayee won conferred the title of Indias Best Parliamentarian in 1994.

In 2015, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, Indias highest civilian award.
